What’s With the 80?
Path 80 began with a simple question: If someone is required to complete 80 hours a month of work, education, training, or community engagement to maintain an important benefit, can those hours lead to something more? We believe they can. For people subject to the new Medicaid requirements, 80 hours should not simply become another box to check. When possible, those hours can build skills, create work experience, lead toward a credential, strengthen a résumé, expand relationships, or open the door to a better opportunity.
Path 80 is also about something larger. Sometimes the paperwork becomes part of the crisis. A health problem, job loss, insurance claim, benefit change, family obligation, or other life disruption can suddenly place someone inside a complicated system of notices, forms, deadlines, documentation, phone calls, portals, and decisions. Knowing how to navigate that system can matter almost as much as knowing the rules. Path 80 helps people learn how to do both: meet today’s requirements and build greater stability for tomorrow.
Make the Hours Matter
For people facing work, education, training, or community-engagement requirements, Path 80 helps them think beyond compliance. When possible, required activities can also be used to:
- Develop useful skills
- Work toward education, training, or certification
- Create meaningful work or volunteer experience
- Build relationships and references
- Explore new career possibilities
- Support a longer-term employment or stability goal
Meet the requirement. But when possible, come out of it with something you didn’t have before.
Navigate the System
Path 80 also teaches practical skills for navigating paperwork-heavy systems. The challenge is not limited to Medicaid. People encounter complicated administrative systems when dealing with health insurance, disability, employment, public benefits, child support, insurance claims, medical leave, and many other major life situations. Path 80 teaches people to slow the process down and figure out what they are being asked to do, when they need to do it, what they need to keep, how to know whether it worked, and what to do when it doesn’t.
The goal is not to turn people into experts in every system. The goal is to help people become better navigators of the systems that affect their lives.
The Path 80 Approach
READ IT → DO IT → SAVE IT → CHECK IT → PUSH IT
Read It:
Start with what is in front of you. What does the letter, notice, form, email, or portal message say? What are you being asked to do? What is the deadline? If you don’t understand it, know where to get help understanding it.
Do It:
Take the required action accurately and on time. Complete the form, make the call, upload the document, send the fax, mail the paperwork, or respond through the portal. If you don’t know how to do it, learn how or get help doing it.
Save It:
Keep proof of what you did. Make copies, take pictures with your phone, save PDFs, take screenshots, keep fax confirmations, save emails, write down confirmation numbers, and keep important paperwork together.
Check It:
Don’t assume it’s done because you sent it. Check that it was received and processed. Find out if anything is missing and what happens next. Keep a record of when you checked and what you were told or what the system showed.
Push It:
If something isn’t right, know what to do next. Follow up, ask questions, request a supervisor, use an appeal process, or seek appropriate professional or community assistance. Know when the first answer should not be the last answer.
You don’t have to know everything about the system. You need to know how to move through it.
Who We Help
Path 80 works through organizations that serve people facing complicated systems, paperwork requirements, benefit changes, and life transitions. Ridea Works provides workshops and hands-on learning experiences that teach the Path 80 method: READ IT → DO IT → SAVE IT → CHECK IT → PUSH IT
Participants learn the method and then have an opportunity to apply it to a real life situation. Workshops include time for participants to bring notices, forms, letters, or other paperwork they are trying to understand and organize, and review with trained staff or appropriate community partners available to help them identify what the documents are asking, important deadlines, next steps, and when additional professional assistance may be needed. Organizations we work with include:

- Faith-based organizations
- Libraries and other trusted community institutions
The goal is not simply to complete a form for someone. It is to help people learn a method they can use the next time a complicated letter, deadline, claim, or administrative process enters their life.
Why It Matters
There is a gap between people and programs. A gap between benefits and better lives. A gap between good intentions and clear direction. Sometimes there is another gap: The gap between completing the paperwork and successfully navigating the system. People can lose time, money, benefits, and opportunities because they missed a deadline, misunderstood a notice, could not prove what they submitted, or did not know what to do when the process broke down. Path 80 provides practical tools and education to help people close those gaps.
